Custom NBR Spliced O-Rings Description

NBR, also known as nitrile rubber or nitrile butadiene rubber, provides good resistance to mineral oils, lubricants, grease and many petroleum-based fluids. It is widely used for sealing applications involving industrial pails, buckets, drums, containers and closure systems for lubricants, paints, coatings and other industrial products.

Solid cord, hollow tubing and customized extrusion profiles can be produced according to the sealing groove, required compression and application conditions.

Industrial-grade NBR is available as standard. For food-contact applications, suitable NBR compounds and joining systems can also be evaluated according to the required regulatory standard and final application.

NBR Sealing Rings Data Sheet

NBR Sealing Ring Hardness

Typical hardness range: 50–80 Shore A

For many industrial sealing applications, 60–70 Shore A is commonly selected.

Softer compounds can be considered when greater conformability or compression is required, while harder compounds can provide improved dimensional stability.

Final hardness should be selected according to the groove dimensions, compression ratio, sealing media and operating conditions.

Custom Size

NBR sealing rings are mainly manufactured according to customer drawings, samples or actual lid groove dimensions.

Customization options include:

  • Extrusion outer diameter
  • Inner diameter for hollow NBR tubing
  • Wall thickness
  • Solid or hollow structure
  • Custom extrusion profile
  • Ring circumference
  • Finished ring diameter
  • Cut length before joining
  • Rubber hardness
  • Material formulation
  • Joint position
  • Color
  • Packaging method

Samples can be prepared for dimensional inspection, assembly testing and sealing evaluation before mass production.

Silicone Sealing Ring Splicing / Bonding
Custom Nitrile Rubber Sealing Rings

Bonding and Splicing

The NBR extrusion is cut to the required length and the two ends are joined to form a continuous sealing ring.

Depending on the product structure and application requirements, suitable joining processes may include:

  • Adhesive bonding
  • Cold splicing
  • Hot splicing
  • Vulcanized joining

The appropriate joining method should be selected according to the required joint strength, sealing conditions, production quantity and regulatory requirements.

The joint area can be inspected for:

  • Alignment
  • Joint strength
  • Surface condition
  • Diameter consistency
  • Excess adhesive or flash
  • Finished ring circumference

Food-Contact NBR Option

For applications where the sealing ring may come into contact with food, beverage ingredients or food-processing products, suitable food-contact NBR compounds can be evaluated according to the required application and regulatory standard.

Food-contact applications should be considered separately from standard industrial NBR because the rubber formulation, additives, curing system and joining materials may differ.

Before material selection, we recommend confirming:

  • Type of food or beverage
  • Contact temperature
  • Contact duration
  • Required regulatory standard
  • Cleaning conditions
  • Required oil or chemical resistance

Final compliance should be confirmed based on the selected compound, joining system and finished-product testing requirements.

Suitable Media

Depending on the selected NBR formulation, the sealing ring may be suitable for contact with:

  • Mineral oils
  • Lubricating oils
  • Grease
  • Certain hydraulic oils
  • Water
  • Water-based paints
  • Coatings
  • Adhesives
  • Other compatible industrial fluids

For food products, beverage additives, concentrated chemicals, solvents or special synthetic lubricants, material compatibility should be confirmed before mass production.

Installation

  1. Make sure the sealing groove is clean and free from contamination.
  2. Place the NBR sealing ring into the lid or container groove.
  3. Fit the ring evenly around the full circumference.
  4. Avoid twisting or excessive stretching during installation.
  5. Make sure the joint is seated correctly inside the groove.
  6. Check that the ring is installed evenly without local lifting or deformation.
  7. Close the lid and apply the required compression.
  8. Perform leakage or sealing tests when necessary.

No special installation tools are normally required for standard pail and bucket lid applications.

Quality Inspection

NBR spliced sealing rings can be inspected for:

  • Extrusion outer diameter
